Binoculars are the most important birding tool. The numbers on them tell you most of what you need.
Decoding 8x42
The first number is magnification; the second is the objective lens diameter in mm. Most birders prefer 8x: steadier image and wider view than 10x. A 42mm lens gathers more light than 32mm but weighs more.
Features that matter
- Field of view – wider makes finding birds easier.
- Close focus – under about 6 feet is great for butterflies and nearby birds.
- Waterproof and fog-proof – nitrogen or argon purged.
- Eye relief – 15mm+ if you wear glasses.
- Phase-coated roof prisms or porro prisms – both can be excellent; porro is often cheaper for similar clarity.
